Saul Pasque Memorial

January 14, 2010

Riders and families from Geelong to Port Fairy and all points in between gathered to celebrate a life cut short. Saul Pasque of Camperdown was killed while training at Ceres near Geelong on January 18 2005 aged 31 so a memorial ride in his name has been conducted annually to honor his memory.

Saul was a popular young man about Geelong where he spent considerable it seems lured by the considerable charms of our own Felicity Wilson, quite understandable.

Hi All,
Just wanted to remind everyone that in order to race the crit's (and any race for that matter)you must have renewed / signed up for your CSV licence.  Obviously you won't have you 2010 membership card yet so it is very IMPORTANT that you alL bring along your computer generated receipt in order to prove to us that you have signed up and are insured to race.

If ytou don't already have a licence you will either need to take out a day licence or a 3 ride licence.

The 1 and only reason for this is to make sure you are all insured and covered to race.  In the unlikely event there is an accident of any sort you are covered, as is the club.

This is a hard and fast rule and no one will be exempt, so make sure you all take the necessary steps prior to the next race.

GCC is rarely privileged to have a Mentor such as "The Ken" to light our way in the socially fraught world of "Bunch Riding". The following may help you avoid some of the pitfalls.

Despite the underwhelming response to my first "Blog" I will persist. The following report was available within the Ross Bush Memorial Race Report but may have been missed so here it is again.

Background.

Saturday September 6, 2009 marked the eleventh running of “The Bushy” to mark the training death of talented, respected and much loved cyclist and triathlete Ross Bush in 1998. This race is far and away Geelong Cycling Club’s biggest event with fields of ninety riders common.

Greetings All,

Thanks to Geelong Cycling Glub Web Master, Simon I have graduated to the world of the "Blog" and let me tell you I am barely able to type with excitement. This is an astute move by Simon as I now have a place to air my world view independent of him.

Simon has struggled with the various contributions I have made to the Web Site, understandably as he no doubt felt the need to distance himself from the thoughts expressed.  Clearly this is why Simon is "The Web" Master.

Evening All,

Just wanted to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has been helping out at our weekly races.  I appreciate the time and effort that is being put in, great work.

Great to see a few new faces on the weekend.  A hard race/weekend to pick to come and try out, very tough course.  Make sure as members you makew yourself known to the first timers and make them feel welcome.  We all started out as new members once and the more help we get and can give the easier it is..

Some of us have been riding for a long time, others are new to cycling all together, some of us race and others don’t; however each of us has a valid opinion and most probably have some fine ideas on how to make cycling with the Geelong Cycling Club or using the club’s website a better experience .

When we are riding with the various Geelong bunches we quite often hear other riders talking about things the club should or shouldn’t be doing or what they like and don’t like.  The challenge for any club is how do we harness this chat and capture many of the great ideas that are being discussed in a healthy and constructive way.

To help us tap into your thoughts in such a manner the club has set up an on-line process for you use that is accessible via the Geelong Cycling Club website.

Your Community - 100 Members Strong!

Webmaster
Thanks everyone! GeelongCycling.com just got our 100th member since the site was relaunched in January of this year. Not that I can profess to knowing each one of the site’s members I would suggest that the vast majority of members actually ride a bicycle either competitively, recreationally or socially. So if you think that 100 might not seem like a significant number at first, try thinking about it in terms of if each one of these 100 members turned up to your local training bunch at the same time you would have be a pretty big group ride indeed!

It is fair to say that GeelongCycling.com has undergone some significant changes over the last few years from having solely static content to becoming a database driven content management system website. Our vision also changed over this time from simply providing static member information to building an on-line “home” for the Geelong cycling community that fostered the development and promotion of cycling as sport, recreation and a social outlet as well as allowing for any member of the public to participate in and grow their own network of cycling friends and contacts. This of course is certainly not a new concept; I, along with a couple of hundred million or so others, have been playing around on Facebook, MySpace and other social networking sites for years.

With the acceptance of social networking sites into the mainstream vernacular I saw a great opportunity to create our own cycling community. Instead of assimilating ourselves into a pre-existing social networking site and thus potentially losing control of our own identity and philosophies amongst the pokes, gifts, vampires, zombies, spamming, irrelevant group and application invites (those of you who use these sites will know exactly what I mean) I started looking around to see if there was a social networking “engine” that our own website could use and that we could control.
