Come and Try Day - ANZAC Day

The threat of inclement weather failed to deter nine hardy cyclists to Geelong Cycling Club’s first Come and Try day for several years.

Brief introductions soon made way for some on road experience under the watch full eye of our “Mentors”, Geelong’s “Legends of Cycling”.

Ken Evans, Sun Tour winner from 1972 and the Sir Hubert Opperman “Oppy Oscar” Cyclist of the Year again in 1972 took charge of three junior boys, all delighted to be tutored by Ken. Stephan of Ocean Grove on his Dad’s hand me down “Ken Evans” bike, as he was delighted to meet the bikes builder.

Ken, a pro from a youthful 18 years of age has many triumphs to his credit but none elicits more pride than being the first of three cyclists to win two Sun Tour stages on the one day, the other two being current Pros and Tour de France regulars, Robbie McEwan and Baden Cooke.

Mexico City Olympian Donny Wilson accepted responsibility for five men taking the plunge into group cycling. Donny’s firm hand inspired confidence in our small bunch as the mysteries “rolling over”, the dangers of “overlapping” and the joy of a “good sit” became clear. Big Sam of Geelong noted a “good sit” was something he gave but rarely received.

World Cup cyclist Kerryn Charman took our only lady rider under her wing and soon had her mixing it with the boys.

It was most gratifying to see everybody’s confidence grow under the close guidance of our mentors, each participant taking skills with them to develop and help make their cycling safer and more relaxed.

Business commitments kept John Trevorrow away for most of the afternoon but his presence was appreciated as racers and novice alike, enjoyed refreshments after Race Day formalities were concluded. A special mention to immediate past GCC Vice President Alan Schmidt for his famous “Wagyu” steaks and to Lori and Helen for their work on the day.
