Last Sunday I was returning from a longish ride. Fine conditions and tapping along approaching the 'Bunnings' Waurn Ponds intersection intending to take the left lane turn onto Pigdon's Road, past Deakin Uni up to Highton. On my right was a line of traffic heading towards Geelong, banked up and stationary at the red light. I was about 80 metres or so from the left hand turn. There is no bike lane marked on the road and I was to the left. Suddenly a work utility went past me at around 80 kph plus and I reckon 6 inches of space between the ute and me is stretching it. As the driver jammed on the brakes at the left hand turn I managed to get the rego number but couldn't quite get up to the ute as it sped around the corner onto Pigdon's Road and then proceeded to tailgate every other driver out of the way. Now unfortunately we have all been in situation. To say I was somewhat disappointed in the lack of courtesy shown by my fellow road user is perhaps an understatement. I kept repeating the rego number like some mantra as I continued up Pigdon's Road. Finally I could contain this no longer and halfway up the hill, stopped, pulled over, got off the bike and pulled my mobile out. A phone call to Victoria's "finest" explaining the incident and providing the rego number has had a sensible outcome. One contrite and apologetic road user who confirmed the incident to the police and will now lose some points and dollars as a result. Hopefully he learns a bit from it as well. So, if it happens to you - stay calm!, try and get the rego, note the time, place etc and follow it up with a complaint. From little things big things grow (and no this is not about my size on the bike!) |
