Mark Hooper (Geelong CC) won the 2008 Rob Vernon Memorial Handicap off scratch, on the weekend at Emu Creek.

Hooper got home ahead of Scott Keating (Ballarat & Sebastopol CC) and Craig McCartney (Footscray CC) in a bunch sprint, at the end of the 112km circuit. The race is held in memory of Rob Vernon who won the Australian Cadet Championship as junior.

Conditions weren't ideal with strong winds, accompanied by climbs at Sutton Grange and Metcalf-Redesdale Roads made riding tough for the front markers. From all reports, the scratch markers had brought the race together with around 20km to go and forced their way to the front. Not far from home a bunch of 12 riders, had moved off the front ensure a frantic sprint for the line.
Sean Finning (Castlemaine CC) went too early in his sprint for home, allowing Hooper to swoop to take the win. Joanna Wall (Bendigo & District CC) was the first female to cross the line.

In the junior racing Aidan Neilson (Brunswick CC) won Under 11/13 category, Ethen McMennemin (Broadford Seymour CC) and Mark White (Wangaratta CC) took the Men/Women 15 and Men/Women 17 respectively.
