GCC Hill Climbing Championships

Something new for 2013 with the Geelong Cycling Club heading to Lorne for an ascent of the Erskine Falls Climb. In perfect riding conditions the 8.3 Km climb averaging 5.1% awaited riders. From the starting gate is was straight up hill before making the right turn up the “William Street Wall”. This section is less than 300m in length but at a gradient of 20% it would test riders from the beginning.  The varying gradient for the reminder of the climb meant any drop in effort would see dramatic loss in speed that would be hard to recover.

Riders set off at 1 minute intervals all hoping to catch there minute man. There were many great performances on the day, with much of the credit going to some of the clubs younger riders. Zac Dynes fresh from the Australian Hill climbing championships lead the way with a time quick enough for 7th overall. Matt Castles & Matt Mills not too far behind proving the next generation is closing in fast.

Of the seniors there were many notable performances, Ben Culton showed his continued improvement. Nathan Townsend,  Daniel Lamb, Scott Betteridge were all in a tight tussle for a podium spot. In the end climbing specialist Simon Masters came in 3rd, ahead of former elite triathlete Anthony Goss. But the ride of the day went to Nick Squillri who took fastest time. Nick was completed the climb in under 21 minutes which is a phenomenal effort, 1:20 clear of the second place rider. All credit to Nick on a sensational ride.

Thanks to all the riders who competed, although it was a tough race all enjoyed the experience. Thanks to the marshals who assisted on the day.

Race Results 8/12/2012 Belmont Island Crits

Written by Daniel Wilson

Race Results:

Round 4 of the summer series was held in hot conditions at Belmont Island Crit circuit last Saturday. A good contingent 50+ riders across all grades took to the track in the rising temperatures. Some strong performances were seen in all grades.

The temperatures left most riders calling for water at the end of their races. Some of the juniors deciding that a make shift ice vest was the way to go. A handful of ice down the GGC kit helping to keep things cool.

On the track in D grade Craig Bridger lead home the bunch for the win that included some new faces to racing. D grade still being a great way to dip the toe into racing and learn some of the racing skills required. The club Pres was on hand to offer some pointers.

C grade race exploded early thanks to the attacking efforts of Matt Mills & Nathan Townsend. The two riders worked well together to stay clear of the fragmenting bunch. The fast improving Matt taking his first win. Both riders strength surely earning them a promotion to B grade in the New Year?

In B grade tactics were high as riders showed a reluctance to wanting to lead down the front straight into the head wind. In the end Tony Butler jumped off the front on the last lap holding off Phil Millar and Scott Simon to score his first criterium win.

In A grade Oliver Kent-spark showed his Nationals training was coming on breaking away early from a strong bunch. He was joined by an inform Lee Burchell with the pair working well and not being caught by the wilting bunch. Oli taking the win over Lee with Tom Paton taking 3rd from the bunch sprint.

In the Juniors, racing was hotly contested with a number of battles within the race breaking out.

Well done to all riders.

Thanks goes also to Paul Collins(C grade) and Phil Millar(B grade) for taking the time to provide the following race reports from their respective grades.

C Grade by Paul Collins

Things started well in C grade with the Club President John Burt rolling around for the first half lap parting wisdom to the bunch, but as soon as the first lap ritual was over it seemed to be on with an attack by Matty Mills. The surprised bunch was in two minds as to either let him go or chase him down. One person chased then another two untill a group of six had broken away and split C grade into two seperate bunches leaving the rest of the bunch to battle the conditions and trying to organize a chase. Matty and new to Geelong Nathan Townsend broke away from Harry W, Mark T and Paul C about 20min into the race. At the 35min mark Paul C dropped off from Harry and Mark. From there the question was the placings for 1st and 2nd then 3rd and the unlucky 4th, Matty managed to edge out Nathan for the win (and a move to B Grade for both) followed by Mark over Harry with a big last effort. Paul, Lyndal, Sarah And others all following through in what can only be described as hot, windy and very tough conditions.

B Grade by Phil Millar

B grade saw a better turn out than last visit to the Belmont Island, with 8 riders taking to the track to brave the searing heat.  After a neutral first lap the pace was on with the second lap of the Belmont Island proving to be the quickest of the race.  An early break by Phil Millar lasted a couple of laps before the bunch finally decided he had been out the front for long enough caught back up again.  As the wind built, and with the heat beginning to taking its toll, the pace settled; although most of the pace making was left to a brave few.  A couple of small attacks were quickly brought back, as the wind proved too much for a break to stick.  The last lap started with an almost pedestrian ride into the wind up the main straight as no one was prepared to push the pace until an audacious attack on the back straight saw Tony Butler build what proved to be a winning gap from the fast finishing bunch.

Staughton Vale Handicap - Sat 6th of October, 2012

Written by Daniel Wilson

Staughton Vale handicap race will be on this Saturday the 6th of October and will conclude our winter program.

The inaugural "Donald Wilson Winter Aggregate Winner" will be crowned after the event.

Event details can be found here.

The following report has been kindly written by Don Bird

Sutherlands Creek was again the setting for this year’s tribute to Ross Bush. The Ross Bush Memorial is held annually by the Geelong Cycling Club. The 80 Riders unfortunately didn’t receive any breaks in the terrible weather before or during the 80 kilometer race. As the limit bunch of riders set off the rain and winds increased in force and pushed all riders to their limits. Due to the extreme weather some 50 riders would be unable to complete the race and would record a DNF beside their name. Geelong’s Under 17 riders Ryan Burt and Zac Dynes put in a very strong performance and looked as if they would take out the top prizes before the very strong and classy scratch bunch hauled them in just prior to the finish. Fastest time and eventual winner Mark Hooper edged out Tom Paton and last years winner Lee Burchell third with only 0.4 seconds seperating the three riders. Fastest Female for the event was Lucy Codwill. Afterwards at The Sutherlands Creek Tennis Club afternoon tea was held and a  short tribute about the "Larrikin" Ross Bush was told, which was greatly received by all who attended. Once again a great job by Dan Wilson, Phil Spark and the Geelong Cycling Club Committee for their great work.

1st Mark Hooper    2nd Tom Paton    3rd  Lee Burchell   4th  Ben Johnson

5th Matthew Heath  6th Geoff Robertson  7th Ryan Burt  8th Zac Dynes

9th Ben Webster  10 th Scott Keating
