About Criterium Racing

A criterium, or crit, is a bike race held on a short course usually less than 3 kilometers in length. Race length is usually time based rather than distance, plus a set number of laps (60min +3 laps). Event duration is usually shorter than road races; however the average speed and intensity are often higher.

Criteriums require a mix of good technical skills — in particular, the ability to corner smoothly while "holding your line" and the ability to ride safely in a large bunch on short and sometimes tight circuits.

The Geelong Cycling Club run Criterium events over the Summer season, November through March. We use a number of different race circuits, the Belmont Island Criterium Track, Eastern Gardens & Ocean Grove Industrial Estate. All races are closed to traffic with full use of the road or track.

The club runs a number of different grades catering for all levels of riders including an instructional based grade for new riders with expert advice and on bike tutoring.
