About Road Racing

Geelong Cycling club runs its road racing season primarily from April through September. Races are conducted on local roads around the region and are often multi lap of circuits of 10+ kilometers in length. Races vary in distance from 30 up to 100 kilometers over course of varying terrain. Race locations include Paraparap, Sutherlands Creek, Meredith, Maude.

The club conducts two types of events, scratch and handicap events.

In scratch races riders are separated into bunches of similar abilities, A, B, C, D grades. Each grade races over a set distance with the winner being the first rider across the line in each grade.

In handicap races riders are separated into small bunches of similar abilities. Bunches are released at time intervals with the slowest group heading off first and the fastest last. The winning rider is the first rider to cross the line irrespective of when they started. Good cooperation between riders in the bunch is the key to any chance of victory. This type of race gives all abilities a chance of achieving success.

The Club conducts come and try events to help bridge the gap between recreational riding and racing. Racing skills, bunch craft and the finer points of bike racing are taught by expert club members.
