Results: Summer Crit Series - Round 2

The GCC criterium series continued with a bang in 2010 as 40 hungry riders descending on Torquay for some authentic street style racing. Sunny skies, light winds and warm temperatures welcomed riders as they prepared to continue their assault on the summer series aggregate. In the end, veteran Tony Ross, the consistent Oliver King and VIS rising star James Langedyk outlasted their opponents to take out C, B and A grades respectively.

After round 2 of the Criterium series, Oliver King leads with 19 points before his move next round into A grade. The series is tight with James Fitzgerald and Gary Wearmouth trailing closely behind on 18 and 16 points each. The series aggregate will be updated in full soon. The next round of the series will continue next Sunday at Eastern Gardens.

How it Happened...

C grade:

The pace and aggression was on from the start as Craig Strong attacked out of the neutral zone to string the bunch out. Within two laps only 12 riders remained in contention as Paul Beretta and Vincent Glynn continued to drive the relentless pace. However Vincent quickly paid for his efforts and lost contact as Craig Strong attacked again. Half way through the race things settled down and riders began to look at each other with thoughts of the finish. David Lay bravely fought his way back into contention after spending many laps off the back. However his efforts proved fruitless as Paul Beretta lit things up again with 3 laps to go. Unfortunately for him Tony Ross was quickest out of the final corner to hold off a fast finishing Anothy Reyntjes and Liam McGarry.

B grade:

Again racing was fierce in B grade as riders rode aggressively from the get go. Mountain biker Nick Squillari and a rapidly improving Oliver King had things stretched out in the early proceedings. The rubber band quickly snapped as riders were catapulted out the back in rapid concession. Things got confusing as crashes ensured on the hair pin corners, but riders sorted themselves out until only Nick, Oliver and a resilient Tom MacMunn remained in contention. Coming out of the final corner Nick lead out early allowing Oliver King to come out of his slim stream to take the win comfortably. Unfortunately for Nick, Tom passed him in the dying metres to snatch 2nd place.

2 Tom MacMunn 9

A grade:

Pain and suffering was the order of the day in A grade. Gary Wearmouth showed his cards early with an attack out of the blocks. James Fitzgerald sensed some danger and quickly joined him. However VIS gun James Langedyk was going to have none of that and quickly dragged the rest of the bunch across to the leading duo. Repeated attacks ensured until James decided to put his foot down. With 50 minutes remaining he broke away to never return again. Continuing to build his lead he opened up a un-bridgeable gap. Behind him the chase became desperate and the follow group quickly whittled under the pressure until only James Fitzgerald, Gary Wearmouth and Marcus Falconer remained. The three worked well together but James Langedyk had little trouble hanging on to take the win. Gary surprised the chase group by attacked early to take 2nd and James Fitzgerald just managed to come past Marcus for 3rd.
