Results: Summer Crit Series - Round 3

Consistency has shone through at round 3 of GGC's summer criterium series this weekend. The reliable James Langedyk and Anthony Reyntjes have backed up their recent strong results by taking out A and C grades respectively. Both riders had top two results in last weekend's Torquay round. Paul Jane bucked the trend by claiming B grade honours in his first result for the series. All three riders rode well in windy conditions to best a combined field of more than 60 riders spread over three grades.

How it happened...

A Grade:

Racing was hard and aggressive in A grade with the windy conditions providing the necessary catalyst for a spectular race. James Fitzgerald attacked out of the blocks and immediately created some panic, but the bunch was already prepared and things quickly came back together. Returning from his dominant win last week, James Langedyk attacked repeatly until the bunch finally sucumbed. Only James Fitzgerald, Marcus Wettenhall and Marcus Falconer were initially able to follow James. The chase group behind attempted to bridge, but in the end only Gary Wearmouth was able to get across. The lead five began to work well together to build a dominant lead. However James was still not content to sit back and wait for the finish. With 10 minutes to go he flew the coup and began to quickly build an unbeatable lead. His solo effort was so impressive that he eventually caught and lapped the chasing bunch before going onto take the victory. James Fitzgerald again demonstrated his impressive top speed by sprinting to second in front of Marcus Wettenhall who threw his bike to prefection to hold off a surging Gary Wearmouth.

B Grade:

Racing was tough in B grade. Attacks from Shaun Gilbert, Simon Brown and Paul Jane made life hard for everyone and the results quickly told. In a matter of laps the bunch slowly wittled itself down one rider at a time until only 10 remained. But as soon as riders realised that no one was going to be given any rope to get away, the bunch settled down and everyone started to look at one other. Eventually the final two laps were called and riders had reassigned themselves to a bunch sprint. Coming into the final 300 metres, Paul Jane hit out early, but his impatience was rewarded as he powered home to hold off visiting rider Adi Yusoff and Nathan Wilson.

C Grade:

A big field of 28 riders rolled away for the start of the C grade race, but things weren't too stay that way. The windy conditions soon took their toll as the race split into smaller groups early. Eventually a lead group of 15 took control and began to assert their domance early in the race. Attacks from Paul Beretta, Tony Ross and Anthony Reyntjes took their toll on riders, but the head wind down the finishing straight made solo efforts furtile. With two laps to go a bunch finish looked likely, but Anthony put the foot down late in the last lap and created a small but unbridgable gap to solo to victory. A fast finishing Martin Watters held off Phil Griffiths for 2nd place.
